  2. If only Double Rainboom had such fluid animation :) Loved it! Best PMV in existence, most likely.

Also, I can't help but imagine Celestia at the end going "Really, Luna? This again?" xD

  4. Thank you so much for working so long on this beautiful piece of art. This is my favorite work from the fanbase and was definitely worth the year-long wait. My sister and I are thrilled. Congrats to you on your accomplishment.

    1. We could have been done sooner.. a few months sooner.. but with the Brony Documentary and my own realization that some parts reeeeeally needed an overhaul, it delayed the release.

Not to mention it was not always easy to try and work on it every single day. (sometimes life gets in the way, others its energy that lacks.. that sort of thing)

But we came through in the end.. and with so many that like it, I'm glad I made some difficult choices.

  5. This is absolutely beautiful! I've been following your blog since August and the result was definitely worth the waiting.

You'll probably want to take a break from all this work, but I really hope to see more of your work in the future!

  6. I have been following your project for the past year, ever since you released the animatic video for it last spring. I was really excited about it because Luna is my favorite character in the show.
It was a long wait but it was well worth it.
The animation is so smooth and fluid, the song is was the perfect choice and the singing is phenomenal!
This has to be the best fan-made video I have ever seen!!!

Kudos to you, I hope to see more of your stuff in the in the future.

    Congrats!

  7. Posting this up here too! You guys are awesome and I love your diligence in finishing this labor of love!

HELLO! Firstly, I've loved this concept since it's inception! When Spirit pitched this to me, I wanted to be involved. I am so honored that I was allowed to participate in the small ways that I did. My OC, Gari is the narrator, weaving the tale that surrounds this haunting film. There was a little foal, you don't really see him too much, named Fly-By-Night, that I had a hand in designing as well as the robe that Gari wears at the beginning of the film. To see this finished just makes my day! This film was animated in a style that speaks to me, from the candle flickering at the beginning this whole thing just captivates me. It reminds me of how Don Bluth would tell a story. It is dark and haunting, yet there's a faint glimmer of hope and peace. I am honored to have been a part of this project and I hope that everyone likes it as much as I've come to love it.

    <3 you guys for sure.

  9. This is beautiful. The story this tells in such a short span of time, the smooth animation, everything about this is amazing. Your hard work speaks for itself, and it's brought me to tears. Thank you so much for doing this. You are all are amazing and talented and you've made every brony's life a little better by having made this work of art.

  10. Hi, I'm Toonicorn, and I'm...my gosh, I'm almost in tears here. To see something like this, to realize how much good art inspires more good art, to see the results of such devotion, imagination and talent...this gets me where I live. I wish more people than those in the Pony fandom could see this. They'd be blown away. They'd realize what they've been missing. So much modern animation lacks this sense of wonder, of real magic...this is the kind of thing Walt Disney created. This has touches of "Mary Poppins" and "Fantasia" and "Peter Pan" all rolled into one. Congratulations on such a successful film. It ought to be entered into animation festivals. Could you possibly contact Hasbro and see if it could somehow feature this on the show? I'm serious. And if you're not "professional" animators, and that is your goal, you have nothing to worry about. There is much more than mere mechanics and drawing skill exhibited here. There is a real gift for storytelling and visualization. Again, I congratulate you. I assure you, all of your hard work has paid off handsomely. I wish you the very best in all of your future endeavors. And thank you!

    1. Thank you for the kind words :3

While I, myself, was trained in classical animation, I have very little opportunity to really do it. This is my first real project on a professional setting that I managed to push to completion. With my wife pushing me along as well.

As for Hasbro, if they start taking in consideration fan work like this (even better ones) they take the risk of being swamped and having to spend ressources to deal with it. If they do take it or part of it, it'd be a world first, that's for sure.

With luck however, that project will help with future job opportunities. But I'm glad you found it entertaining.. it means we did our jobs well :3

  11. Thoroughly enjoyed the video - it was a stirring, proper tribute to the Daughter of Dreams.

I did have a slightly nitpicky question for you - what was the significance of the crying Twilight statue near the beginning?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You would prefer to hear this straight from the horse's mouth, but the statue is actually the Lauren Fausticorn, the supposed creator of the pony universe and the royal sisters' mother. I think she's crying for the suffering of the poor townsponies in Canterlot, something Luna is trying to fix.

      Delete
    2. Well.. the significance of the crying Fausticorn can be taken many ways.

One that she happens to know that her child is about to do something very grave (a new colony and not putting your eggs in one basket is a good idea, but her decision to whisk away children, a bit less so.. even if they are doing it on their own free will)

The other is that it is a thought for Lauren's lost little universe in which she really hoped she could have worked on more.

And the last could also be that she is sad for her little ponies and that her two daughters litterally are but children to the events that have been thrusted upon them.

It's all open to interpretation :3

  13. My favourite piece of the animation was the aileron roll Luna does -- it seemed the hardest to do and was pulled off great. A piece that I couldn't distinguish from the show if I tried would be the intro -- absolutely amazing.

I still can't believe that only 2 people worked on it.

  14. Absolutely Phenomenal! I was blown away! This was well worth the wait. Thank you so much for dedicating so much time and effort into this, it clearly shows. We now have a new high watermark in terms of fan made animation, and I'd even go so far as to say you've surpassed show quality in many aspects.
Are you planning on continuing the story at all, because it feels like there is much more to tell? I hope you do make more even if it takes more years, and if so, I will be patiently awaiting your next masterpiece.
Bravissimi to the both of you. I am in awe.

Simply badass.

  23. Wow I am absolutely speechless. I think this is a new level of animation quality the care and the amount of detail of each scene was amazing the directional camera changes while being in full motion is something I have never seen before.

  24. I commented on YT, but I felt the need to do the same here.

This was simply magnificent. You took your time making this, and it shows. The final result is absolutly stunning. This must be one of, if not THE, best animation the fandom ever created.
Thank you for everything you did, it was well, WELL worth the wait.

  25. I love it !

it's wonderful to see where all these characters was pushed, what the fandom did and added.

and, both of you, your work is beautiful. It's a lot of work and a great gift to us. I know it will help you to go forward in your carriers.

  30. I watched the finished product this morning and I am in awe. You created a gorgeous piece of animation and, in a short span of time, the best explanation yet for what motivated the split between Celestia and Luna. (I'm wondering if the official explanation we're going to get in season 4 will be as good as yours!) Congratulations, you should be proud, and I hope this leads to professional success for you!

  34. I first ran across and downloaded the animatic on July 19th of last year and have been along for the ride since then. Even that could NOT prepare me for what I just watched. Thank you all so much for what has been an incredible moment. Y'all have done such a GREAT job! Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Guys, I really love the final product! Volumed characters, ambilights, backgrounds etc are great! Most of all I adore the athmosphere. My most farorite parts of animatic was Luna's flight. And here I'd like to give you a bit of critic.

The high value of FPS looks great when you make face, wings and other misc animation. Unfortinatly spacing doesn't look so nice when you animate distant movements. For example

1:36 - the flight doesn's looks natural, I think because of harsy Luna's turn.

2:24 - Luna is rising too fast and smoothy and wingbeat is too frequent in my opinion.

2:36 - I think it would be better if wingbeat would be 1,5..2 times rarely

2:43 - Luna's getting static in couple of seconds

Sometimes stuff like this looks much more organic in animatic than in final product.

Anyway, in this list are the only moments I disliked.

Greate job, Spirit and Lion! And thank you!

  36. This has to make the top ten pony videos of July! I can't believe how awesome it was! The only thing I don't like, is how the ponies faces look head-on. But, that's very difficult to do,and even the show has problems. After waiting this long, and watching it... I don't know what to do with myself. :S

  38. This was just...magical, you guys did a great job with this and I'm looking forward to future projects down the line, but if you decided to take a break, I could totally understand! by the way, is there any chance we might get that old discord/celestia animatic finished in the future?

    1. There is not only a chance. I am finishing that thing even if it the last thing I do.

  39. The worst part about this video, is that I honestly keep wanting to look for spoilers for the next episode.

This was stunning. Your art style made us feel like this was a part of a dream. Old Disney all over it. I used to think greatest compliment that a fanimator could be given is that it was just like the show. I was wrong. Because this was clearly superior to the show. What ever minor animation flaws, if any, can totally be chalked up to nit-picking.

The only thing I can find to criticize, is that we barely saw any of the 12 foals except for the trio and Moon Dancer. It would've been nice to alternate who got focus during the flight sequence. Considering you worked so hard on each of their design and their puppets.

All in all, spectacular! Congratulations on what is probably the best fan made MLP so far. I think MLP should start taking some notes from you guys.

  40. Wow. Just....wow. That's all I can really say. I love it. <3

  41. Spirit and Lion...
You two have done an amazing work. I really enjoyed it. :)
I'm still feeling in awe over it all.

I know I wasn't the one who worked on it, but having been following the project for over a year, to finally see it finished, felt somewhat like an achievement in itself.

So thank you. For all your hard work, your dedication, your passion, your amazing, entertaining and insightful blog, and of course, this animation. It's no doubt one of the greatest brony works ever, and will always be remembered.

I hope this enriches your portfolios greatly, and gives you both the jobs you so deserve.

I'd like to finish this comment by asking if it would be okay if I talked about your animatic and final animation in a video, while showing footage (or just screenshots), if there would be any problem.

    Thank you once again.

While making the soundtrack of the credits was a lof of fun... it wasn't mented to be as part of the movie but on your little demo animation of the foals, and now, after a year... it was a lovely surprize to realize that you choosed it and I feel really honored to have been part of such amazing project.

    1. I am afraid that we cannot do that. Right now, the video is being downloaded and reuploaded constantly. The only evidence that we have that the video is ours, and it was made by us, is the blog and the fact that we hold the sole maximal quality copy.

If we would distribute that without the seal of a studio, it would cause us really big trouble, since the footage would be pirated indiscriminately, perhaps for content that we wouldn't agree or authorize.
