Children of the Night, The Foals

Here are the character charts for the children that are going to follow Luna through the skies.

Six fillies, six colts, a total of four of every kind (Pegasi, Unicorn and Earth ponies).

Fly-By-Night is a design provided by our good friend Trish Forstner, which ponysona happens to be Gari as well.

Now, let's add some fun to this: Some of them are 100% pulled out of my  designing hat, but most of them are directly inpired in an existing pony or a famous cartoon horse, are you able to tell the refereces?

Even if they don't have much screentime, for the challenge of character design I have each one of them a distict personality, hopefully, if I did my work correctly, you can get a good hint of it just by looking at the charts.

On a side note, just as an anecdote. I considered including Wildfire in COTN as a surprise in the project, but after becoming an official canon character, that would have been an anachrony (meaning that it would be an element that cannot belong to the time period in which the events unfold). So, I developed Maggie instead, and I must say, I am very happy with her. She is a pegasus with a very particular coat, and a slight obsession over shining things.

    1. Thanks Rush!

I guess it is very easy to guess what is the inspiration for Candlelight. ;)

Maggie is one of my favorites as well.

  2. *Jaw Drops*......The designs are amazing! So jealous! XD

Also now I must worryy that " Spirit Storm" will be drowned in the awesomness and cuteness that is " Spirit" !

    1. Thank you very much! I am very glad you like the foals.

Your design would be great for a wild pony though.

IS there any foal that you like in particular?:)

  3. Well, there is already some contradiction with the show's story, so I don't think adding Wild Fire foal would hurt much :3

    Could be fun.

  4. Oh my goodness, Magpie's design. <3 She is so cute. I wish I could design OCs like that. XD But yeah, they are all amazing! Good job. XD

    1. Bonsoir!

Excuse mon français écrit, je me debrouille meilleur en parlant. Merci beaucoup pour ton commentaire! On compte finir le video bientôt.
C'est un travail bien dur, mais ça vaut le coup.

  8. I'm kinda surprised that Nightshade isn't a foal version of Nightshade from G1.

    1. I didn't thought that anyone would bring up that one. Yes, I thought about that, but I didn't liked the G1 design. Instead, I picked the name and gave him an eerie look, based on the Hanna Barbera Wildfire.

    2. hehe, I am a master of obscure knowledge. Plus I always kinda liked Nightsade, was an interesting idea and concept with him. I can't really fault the g1 design as he was meant to look like the musican Prince.

  9. Interesting designs, you made them all?

  10. Is her name Maggie or Magpie? Your post text and picture text conflict. Also, I think the only name here that has been used as an official pony name in the past (Generations 1, 3, and 4) is Moondancer.

    1. Her actual name is Magpie, but everybody calls her Maggie.
Just like We call Pinkie Pie "Pinkie", or AppleJack "AJ". Or more in the brony fandom, "Lulu" for Luna and "Tia " for Celestia. :)

  11. Moondancer is mentioned to be throwing a party that Twilight ends up rejecting an invitation to in episode one of the series. I guess there's no reason why another pony couldn't have also been named that at some point, and you never actually see her.

But you know, you mentioned concerns over anachronism and such.

  12. These are the cutest Fillies and Colts I've seen in the fandom.
I would pick Magpie and Wind Whisper as my favorites.
Hats off to you!.....If.. I had a hat that is... xD

Hello! I truly hope that you- or anyone for that matter, don't take offense to this, but Gari's design looks kinda...like some other animal, doesn't it? Something about the dipped hooves and colored ears, and her belly and snout...its something I've never really been a fan of, as far as Pony OC's go.

Even if patterns like that do exist on irl ponies/horses, I've seen a lot of people take their fursonas, or whatever else, and just convert it into a pony. I don't know why, but its kind of a weird, awkward peeve of mine when people do something like that.

Spirit on the other hand, looks fine, as do most of the other little ponies :) I like how she has a unique set of teeth on her while still staying on model. Plus the black markings under her eyes, though can be mistaken as a little gothic/emo-ish, are still a perfectly harmless, subtle touch :D (so even if she were some other animal previously, I think the conversion to pony turned out better XD)

If I had to pick a favorite, though, I'd say its probably Night Light. Also Moondancer! :D I made a G4 Moondancer myself once~

Anyway I better hush now, I'm rambling @_@

  16. Night shade look awesome. I love his color combination, but he is a really dark shade of purple and he looses his details. The only way I could get a good look at him was to up the brightness on my monitor all the way. My concern would be is he needs to be lighted in order to for see him. The other characters look cute.

    1. worrry not. THe color key in the design sheet is orientative, for mood and feeling. WHen we place a character on screen, we always test if the colors work and/or blend with the background. If we find a problem, we correct it on spot.

    2. Isn't Gari the pony at the start who does the story? Sorry typing in as my dad. Actually a pegasister.

  17. Is Trotamundo supposed to be Rocinante fron Don Quixote?

  18. Magpie for the Win. By tha way, the bird magpie has a lot of symbolism. At least in russian tales.

  19. Gari is the pony at the start p.s

  20. I loved the video and animation, everything was very beautifully put together. (applause)

Two slight errors, however: 1) Princess Luna's mouth didn't transition from front view to side view very smoothly. And 2) (though I'm sure this one even *is* a problem) When Princess Luna and Gari use their magic, there's no magical aura (around Gair's horn in the beginning). On the other hand, that works better for the story of the song because it appears more dream-like that way. So, while not accurate, I think it it works better the way you have it. :)

So I'm not complaining, I just felt I had to point it out, is all.

One other little thing, in the description here, her name is spelled, "Maggie", but in the picture, it's spelled, "Magpie". Which is right?

  21. sigh i can see a novel about this i hope you don't mind if a write a fanfic novel about it its just too beautiful!
